Five Sequences of Biblical Increase

Perhaps the greatest financial promise in the Bible appears in the Apostle Paul's letter to the Philippians. He wrote, "My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). Woven inside this wonderful promise is also a great challenge.

Everyone has certain types of tangible needs. Maybe your need is for employment. Perhaps your car has become like the old gospel song—it "went the last mile of the way." Possibly you live in a two-bedroom house, but because you have helped "multiply and replenish the earth" (Genesis 1:28 KJV), your family could easily fill a four or five bedroom home.

Exchanging Heavenly for Tangible

God says He will do something about your needs. He promises to supply them with His riches in glory. God's provision is just as real, or perhaps more real, than your need.

However, God's riches in glory come from a different dimension. He is saying, "I'll meet your need in the earthly realm with riches that are over here in the heavenly realm." The believer's challenge is to draw riches from the heavenly sphere into the earthly domain.

Suppose I am in Texas. My pocket contains a large roll of Canadian one-hundred dollar bills. Since I have so much money, I invite a huge number of friends out for dinner. After they leave the restaurant, I go to the cash register to pay the bill. There I discover a big problem: all my

Canadian cash cannot buy one Texan hamburger. The money is real, but it comes from another realm. I can benefit from it only if I exchange it first.

The same idea applies to God's riches in glory. They are real. However, they cannot benefit me materially unless I first exchange them into something usable in my present realm.

I believe such an exchange process exists. It consists of five sequences. These steps display themselves over and over throughout the Old and the New Testaments. As a result, the process seems to be a deeply established procedure from God's Word. It allows us to exchange wealth from the spiritual domain into something tangible. It can lead to a powerful, abundant flow of financially related provision.

More Than Unexpected Cash in the Mailbox

Many Christians limit themselves by believing stereotypes of how God provides for financial needs. For example, one commonly expressed perception says Christians walk into the church building, put tithes and offerings into the storehouse there, go home, and then all kinds of money will one day show up in their mailbox. "God said He will open the windows of Heaven," they say, "so maybe this is how the increase will fall on us."

Certainly God does inspire such gifts in the mailbox, especially in instances of urgent, critical need. For example, suppose a person is doing everything possible, but is still cut back on his or her hours at work. A utility bill comes due for $50. God could prompt a saint to slip $55 under this individual's door. Five dollars can be a tithe to the Lord and the remaining $50 will pay the utility bill.
